Comment on Proposed Hospital
Stone Lakes is an urban Refuge, and while that presents opportunity for more folks to conveniently experience good wildlife habitat, proximity to urban uses has led over the years to numerous threats to the Refuge's habitat and its wildlife. The latest challenge comes by way of the proposed California Northstate Medical Center. This project would replace the Stonelake Landing Shopping Center, just across the freeway from North Stone Lake, with a 12 story, 400 bed hospital topped with a heliport. Friends of Stone Lakes recently submitted initial comments to Elk Grove City introducing our concerns regarding building and aircraft bird strikes. We also urged the City to carefully consider not only the need for a new hospital, but whether it's a good idea to locate it within a 200 year floodplain at the very southwest corner of the Sacramento urban area.
